Stethoscope Program

You can make a rewarding gift to our impactful stethoscope program, which ensures that each freshman medical student receives the gift of a stethoscope at their orientation. It is a small but meaningful gift – each stethoscope costs just $250 – that is a tangible way to remind the future generation of their connection to and the support of those of us who support MCG and those who have come before them.

Student Scholarships

With one of the largest class sizes in the nation, the Medical College of Georgia is working to address Georgia’s worsening shortage of physicians.

While our state continues to rank near the top in population and business growth, it routinely ranks near the bottom when it comes to health care measures. Some of the frightening statistics — Georgia ranks 40th in the number of active physicians and 41st in the number of active primary care physicians. Of our state’s 159 counties, 141 are medically underserved areas.

Our state’s health outcomes reflect just how dire the situation is. Cardiovascular disease is the leading cause of death. Our maternal mortality rate is worse than in many third-world countries. Close to 55,000 Georgians are diagnosed with cancer each year.

Simply put, our state – and our nation – needs more physicians.

The need for scholarships has increased along with our class size. Each year, we lose highly qualified applicants to other medical schools, due to a lack of scholarship funding.

Let’s work together to change that and to ensure all Georgians have access to quality health care.

James and Jean Culver Vision Discovery Institute

Almost 20 million Americans — 8% of the U.S. population — have visual impairments. Visual impairments, including blindness, are one of the leading causes of loss of independence among people ages 65 and older.

The Culver Vision Discovery Institute exists to engage in high impact research related to visual function and disease that will have far-reaching clinical applications for patients suffering from blindness and visual disorders. The institute brings basic scientists and clinicians together to research the leading causes of blindness worldwide, including diabetic retinopathy, glaucoma, cataract, age-related macular degeneration, and corneal disruption.

Members of the group are not only committed to fostering interactions among themselves but across Augusta University’s health sciences programs, including in the Medical College of Georgia, Dental College of Georgia and College of Allied Health Sciences.

It is only through research can we ensure new and better treatments for these debilitating disorders and bring the hope of one day preventing them altogether.
