Unite in the Fight
Unite in the Fight Against Cancer, hosted by and supporting the Georgia Cancer Center at Augusta University, is a unique two mile walk that celebrates and honors all those who have been impacted by this disease. Each participating individual/team can wear a ribbon or lei in the corresponding color in honor or memory of a loved one or friend during the walk. Together we unite to raise awareness, support, and hope and to become catalysts in the fight against this deadly disease! This year’s event will take place on Saturday, May 4.
Image Boutique
Georgia Cancer Center’s Image Boutique focuses on improving self-image and self-esteem by helping patients look and feel their best which boosts confidence and enhances quality of life. Our Image Recovery Specialist is a licensed cosmetologist, and licensed mastectomy and prosthetic fitter, who provides confidential consultations for wig selection and fitting, breast prosthesis fitting, surgical and mastectomy garments, and compression garments. The Image Boutique Fund provides financial assistance to any woman who is either uninsured or whose insurance does not cover the cost of wigs, breast prosthesis, surgical bras, compression sleeves, or other products that help patients cope with the physical effects of surgery, radiation, and chemotherapy.
Mobile Lab
The Georgia Cancer Center mobile lab comes to high schools in the region with the goal to educate and inspire the next generation of cancer researchers. Yuen-Keng Ng, PhD, a researcher at the Georgia Cancer Center and creator of the mobile lab, brings all the equipment he needs for his experiment to the classroom and walks the students through the process of searching for mutations associated with chronic myeloid leukemia. The students get hands-on experience with equipment they normally only see in textbooks while getting step-by-step instructions from Ng and his lab assistants. Currently, the lab is for high school classes only, but Ng hopes that with continued funding, the program can grow to a larger scale so they can inspire all students across the CSRA.
Community Outreach Program
Everyone is touched by cancer. The Cancer Information and Awareness Team at the Georgia Cancer Center is committed to cancer prevention and early detection for all. We work with community members in the CSRA and beyond to educate people about cancer and cancer risk factors so people are empowered to make informed decisions about their health. We are here to serve our community and support the Georgia Cancer Center’s mission to reduce the burden of cancer to help all Georgians live longer, healthier lives.
