For more than fifty years, Sand Hills Literary Magazine has stood as a showcase for new and established writers and visual artists and as a vibrant and important part of Augusta University’s Department of English and World Languages. You may have been one of those amazing creatives whose voice or work we helped to amplify through Sand Hills. Or perhaps you were a contributor while you attended or worked at Augusta University (formerly Augusta College, Augusta State, or Georgia Regents University). You may have contributed through your written or visual art, or perhaps you helped edit the magazine. No matter what role(s) you played, we want to thank you for helping shape a publication that has become a meaningful tradition and a launchpad for countless writers and artists.
Today, Sand Hills is more than a literary magazine. It serves as a working laboratory for our students, a place where they learn firsthand what it takes to run a professional publication. Under the guidance of incredibly talented faculty, students participate in every stage of the process: reading submissions, making editorial decisions, shaping layouts, collaborating as a team, and using state-of-the-art software and publishing tools. This real-world experience prepares them not only for careers in writing, editing, design, and publishing, but also for any profession that values communication, critical thinking, and creative leadership.
As we look ahead to what we hope will be another fifty years, we remain committed to maintaining the high quality of the print magazine, expanding opportunities for student learning, and continuing to feature diverse and compelling voices from our region and beyond. To do this, we rely on the generosity of those who know firsthand what Sand Hills means. No amount is too small; every contribution deepens our ability to nurture new writers, empower student editors, and preserve the legacy you helped build.
